Cases of Sustainable Media

19/04/2024

SUMED (Sustainable multidimensional media contents) partners – INNOCAMP.PL, the University of Gdańsk, Universidad Politècnica de València, Turku University of Applied Sciences and the University of Malta - share the ambition to increase their organisations’ social impact. Media education must respond to societal and environmental calls for sustainability, health, and well-being at work.

Professionals working in the field of media need to acknowledge sustainability more. Constantly changing media formats, tools, and methods make integrating sustainability challenging.

SUMED aims to embed sustainability into educational and production processes to prevent further harm to human well-being and the environment. Overall, the entire media supply chain of the output should be as sustainable as possible. This can be best ensured by incorporating sustainability criteria into the education of future media professionals, focusing on both the topic and the associated ways of thinking.

SUMED conducted training sessions for professors, offered courses for students, and provided support and inspiration for curriculum redesign to meet new needs. Developing new and improved curricula and courses will contribute to local communities and organisations that offer students internships and support their new employees' skills.

We started the SUMED project by collecting knowledge from working life to map the needs for curricula development. In this booklet, we ask: are carbon consciousness, constantly changing media, and sustainable working methods acknowledged in working life and higher education institutions? What are the various ways of adapting to them?
